Working in acrylic and bronze, Susan Bahary is a sculptor in representational and abstract styles of animal and human subjects, including life-size sculptures, private commissions, and commissioned public-monument works. A specialty is equine and canine subjects, and in this area she has special knowledge of anatomy from her years as a breeder and exhibitor of champion dogs.
Susan Bahary grew up on Long Island to a family where art and music were enjoyed and encouraged. She graduated with a BA degree from New York University in Manhattan, and in addition to being a sculptress is also a pianist and singer.
Her first professional recognition as a sculptor was a commission to construct a metal sculpture on the grounds of the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, Florida. The 25-foot-high steel-and-aluminum work comprises a series of human-like forms ascending in a spiral.
Another commission is “Always Faithful”, the first official U.S. monument to the heroic war dog. A life-size Doberman pinscher in bronze, the work was unveiled at the Pentagon in 1994 and on public view until its dedication and installation at the U.S. Marine Corps War Dog Cemetery on Guam. The dedication ceremony was part of the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Island’s liberation. Other edition numbers were dedicated and installed at the University of Tennessee’s College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1998, The Alfred M. Gray Marine Corps Research Center in Quantico, Virg. in 2001, and Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in Alabama in 2005.
In 2002, Bahary sculpted “Faithful Partner”, a tribute to California law enforcement dogs that was dedicated and installed at the University of California’s veterinary school at Davis in Sacramento, California. Attorney General Bill Lockyer was the keynote speaker for the event. She is working on yet another memorial commission, due at the end of 2005.
As an equine sculptress, Ms. Bahary has exhibited at the Kentucky Derby, the U.S. Arabian Horse Nationals, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, the Egyptian Event, and other special venues.
